OTHER SIDE OF THE 1964 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: BARRY GOLDWATERClick for Platform
Barry Goldwater was the Republican Candidate who ran against President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1964 Presidential Election. Barry Goldwater was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1909. Goldwater attended the University of Arizona in 1928 and his career in business started in 1929. Goldwater was a soldier in the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 and served the majority of his military career in India. After 37 years of service, retired in 1965. In 1952, Goldwater became a Republican Senator for the state of Arizona. He was re-elected to Senate in 1958. When Goldwater lost the Presidential Election to President Johnson in 1964, Goldwater did not seek re-election for Senate in 1965.
The platform Goldwater ran on was targeted around on five main points; states rights, equality, fiscal responsibility, social security, and leadership. It seems as though Goldwater lost because his ideas, if elected, were quite shallow and obvious. He had no substantial ideas to make the United States a place where everyone want to be. Also, people were invested in the programs that Johnson had begun, and wanted to continue to support his mission. (bioguide.congress.com)
